Walk with us.
We have become convinced that everything God does is deeply personal and intensely particular to the place and people before us. The invitation is for us to participate with Him as we walk the Jesus way.
Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.
- Jeremiah 6:16
For years we stood and looked and asked. Eventually, we heard God’s invitation to walk. We first interpreted it as a hurried invitation - let’s go! But…God had us pump the brakes for over a year…WALK!
It turns out the means matter. It wasn’t about the hurry, but the how. Walk. God wasn’t just inviting us to a path, but a pace. Walk. We are done running around, running ministries, running our lives. We are keeping instep with the Spirit, and it turns out He walks. He tenderly leads those who have young. He gives rest for our souls.
The past year and half wasn’t about discovering God’s will; it was about learning His ways. There was a way that seemed right to us, but in the end our ways always lead to destruction. Now we are walking the Jesus way as we proclaim the Jesus truth to get others in on the Jesus life!
Stand and Look
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;”
- Psalm 1:1 ESV
Walking the wrong way often leads to the end of walking all together. At some point we catch ourselves just standing there. Eventually we get stuck sitting. May we extend God’s invitation to you? Stand and Look! You don’t have to stay sitting where you are. Walking in a new way starts by standing back up and attending to the particulars right where you are.
Ask
“Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear.”
- Isaiah 65:24 ESV
Asking is really answering. It is God who moves first. Our call to God in prayer is really answering His call to us. Before my little girl ever said, “Dada”, I had spoken the words over her a hundred times. We learn to speak words to God because the Word Himself has already spoken us into being. Prayer is more about communion than communication and more about formation than information. Prayer is the primary way you participate in the life of God, so even if you are still in the babbling stage, rejoice to know your father delights to commune with you.
Walk
“whoever says he abides in [Jesus] ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
- 1 John 2:6 ESV
When Jesus revealed Himself as the way, He wasn’t so much giving us a map to pattern our lives after. Jesus as the way means He is present to us as a living guide that we might participate in His life. Walking the Jesus way means living life in community: the community of Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Walking with Jesus also means walking with others in the community of the Church. We are interconnected and interdependent, we walk together or not at all.
